Veneers Q & A
What are veneers?
Porcelain veneers are very thin semi-translucent laminates that are permanently bonded to the surfaces of the front (visible) teeth. Veneers can be used:
- To correct the appearance of crooked teeth
- To close gaps between teeth
- To correct the appearance of teeth that look too small
- To cover cracks or chips
- To hide deep discoloration that can't be corrected with teeth whitening
Made of a durable, translucent material, veneers can be tinted to match your own healthy tooth color so the restorations appear completely natural. In most cases, veneers can be placed in just two visits. During the first visit, the tooth surface is prepared for the veneer by removing a small amount of tooth material to ensure the veneer fits properly. An impression is made and sent to the lab where the veneer will be made. At the second visit, the veneer is carefully applied using a strong adhesive.
What are crowns?
Crowns are restorations that cover the entire tooth to address issues like chips and fractures, dark fillings or deep and pervasive discoloration. They are often applied following root canal therapy to provide strength to the treated tooth. Crowns are typically applied in two visits. During the first visit, the damaged tooth material is removed to make room for the crown. An impression is made which is given to a ceramist who creates a life-like crown. A temporary crown will be placed over the tooth to protect it. At the second visit, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is tried on the tooth to verify the perfect fit.
What is dental bonding?
Dental bonding uses special composite materials to restore teeth damaged by decay or trauma. Bonding is used to change the size or shape of your teeth, creating a smile that appears natural, symmetrical and space free. This single-visit procedure provides a fast solution for a more attractive smile and may eliminate the need for orthodontic treatment in some cases.
